After care
Compression and Support
- Surgical bra essential for proper positioning
- Provides support and reduces movement
- Wear continuously except for cleaning (first 2-3 weeks)
- Comfortable bra acceptable after 3-4 weeks
- Proper support prevents complications and improves results
Activity Restrictions
- No lifting, pushing, or pulling for 4-6 weeks
- No strenuous upper body exercise for 4-6 weeks
- Light walking acceptable after 3-4 days
- Sleeping on back only for first 4-6 weeks
- Avoid sleeping on stomach or sides
Wound Care
- Keep incisions clean and dry
- Showering acceptable if incisions can stay dry
- Bathing/soaking: wait until incisions fully healed
- After suture removal: gentle cleansing acceptable
- Continue sun protection on scars (prevents darkening)
Pain and Swelling
- Pain typically peaks first 3-5 days
- Swelling peaks at 48-72 hours
- Take pain medication as prescribed (don't wait for pain to increase)
- Ice packs if approved; alternate with heat
- Elevation and rest help reduce swelling
Massage and Movement
- After initial healing (3-4 weeks), gentle massage may be prescribed
- Breast massage helps with implant settling (if applicable)
- Specific massage techniques may be taught
- Continue massage as directed for optimal results
- Do not perform massage before approved
Return to Activities
- Driving: 48 hours (when off pain medications)
- Office work: 1-2 weeks
- Light exercise: 2-3 weeks
- Heavy lifting: 4-6 weeks minimum
- Contact sports: 6-8 weeks
- Full recovery: 6-8 weeks
Long-term Care
- Continue proper support with good bras
- Regular self-examination important
- Maintain healthy weight to preserve results
- Consider regular mammograms as recommended
- Follow surgeon's specific long-term instructions
