After care
Dressing and Cast Management
- Nasal splint/cast typically remains 5-7 days
- External dressing removed at first follow-up
- Keep cast dry; avoid water contact
- Do not try to remove cast or splint yourself
- Follow surgeon's specific instructions for splint care
Nasal Care
- Avoid blowing nose for 1-2 weeks
- Very gentle saline rinses may be allowed (ask surgeon)
- Nasal breathing may be difficult initially (normal)
- Mouth breathing acceptable temporarily
- Continue prescribed saline spray if directed
Pain and Swelling
- Significant swelling expected (peaks at 48-72 hours)
- Swelling takes weeks to resolve and months for final shape
- Continue ice packs for 3-4 days
- Warm compresses from day 5 onward
- Headaches common; manage with approved pain medication
Breathing and Congestion
- Breathing difficulty expected initially
- Nasal passages may feel congested (normal)
- Avoid nasal decongestants unless approved
- Avoid saline sprays if not approved
- Breathing typically improves significantly after splint removed
Activity Timeline
- Rest for first 2-3 days
- Light walking: 3-4 days
- Office work: 1-2 weeks
- Contact sports: 6-8 weeks
- Full recovery: 3-6 months for final shape
Important Restrictions
- Avoid nose contact and touching for weeks
- No glasses/sunglasses for 3-4 weeks (use alternatives)
- No contact sports or activities risking nose impact for 8 weeks
- Avoid blowing nose, sneezing into tissue (mouth open)
- Sleeping position critical (back, head elevated)
